  • The Kerala government will set up the state's first Petcoke (petroleum coke)-based power plant using the fuel produced from BPCL-Kochi Refinery's Integrated Refinery Expansion Project (IREP).

  1. Afghanistan has become 163rd member nation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), global trade body after 11 years of negotiations.
  2. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a resolution No. 2254 outlining a peace process in Syria.
  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally inaugurated the All-India conference of Directors General of Police (AICDGPs) at Dhordo in white Rann of Kutch region near Bhuj, Gujarat. Three day conference was inaugurated in the presence of Union Minister for Home Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Home Kiran Rijju and Haribhai Patel.
  4. West Bengal Government has approved proposal for formation of five new districts in the state. With this the total number of districts of Bengal will increase to 25.
  5. India's biggest Wildlife Rescue Centre named as Gorewada Zoo and Wildlife Rescue Centre has been commissioned at Gorewada near Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  6. Uttar Pradesh government has decided to enforce the ban on the use of polythene across the state to protect the environment and public health.
  7. Former Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur (62) has been appointed as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).
  8. Sahitya Academy has announced the names of 23 poets and authors who will be conferred the prestigious 2015 Sahitya Akademi Award. This award has recognised premier works in 23 Indian languages that includes 6 books of short stories, 6 of poetry, 4 novels, 2 books each of essays, criticism and plays and 1 memoir

Sahitya Academy Awards For 2015 Announced

  • The prestigious Sahitya Academy Awards for 2015 have been announced.
  • The Playwright and novelist Cyrus Mistry's English novel "Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer" and KR Meera's "Aarachar" in Malayalam are among the works that have won the award.
  • The other two novelists who have won the award are
    • Jaswinder Singh in Punjabi
    • Madhu Acharya 'Ashawadi' in Rajasthani.
  • 6 books each of short stories and poetry have been chosen for this year's award.
  • Poets Honoured are:
    • Brajendra Kumar Brahma in Bodo
    • Dhian Singh in Dogri,
    • Ramdarash Mishra in Hindi,
    • K.V. Tirumalesh in Kannada,
    • Kshetri Rajan in Manipuri and
    • Ram Shankar Awasthi in Sanskrit.

  • Six writers awarded for their short stories are:
    • Kula Saikia in Assamese,
    • Man Mohan Jha in Maithili,
    • Gupta Pradhan in Nepali,
    • Bibhuti Pattanaik in Odia,

  • Other categories: Two books each of essays, criticism and plays and one of the memoirs have won.
